The directorate of School Education of Tamil Nadu circulated 25 guidelines to the Headmasters/Headmistress; to be implemented in each school so as to protect the school children from the possible on-coming dangers

PROTECTION FROM WATER, RAINS AND LIGHTENING:
The Headmaster/headmistress should take imitative steps to cover all the
water Sources, such as wells, open-tanks, and other garbage systems properly.  When such systems have been already covered, he/she should inspect regularly whether those systems are properly covered or not.  Students are to be forbidden to get access to the water sources such as ponds, wells or pools that exist outside the school campus in order to maintain safety.  During their transport to schools, they should be very careful while they come across Rain water Canals and if possible they are advised to avoid opened rain water canals.  All the students must be properly instructed not to get asylum under the trees during the rainy days so as to avoid the dangers of possible Lightening.

PROTECTION FROM ELECTROCUTION:
Students should be advised neither go near to the damaged electrical posts nor stay near to it.  They are to be advised also not to touch cut-down electrical cables or wires or go near to such materials to enhance their safety.  The Headmaster/Headmistress have been advised to confirm if all the electrical connections and the electric circuit keys inside the school campus are in good condition.  Students should not be permitted to operate or handle the electrical systems by themselves in order to avoid possible electrical accidents.  Headmasters/Headmistress are asked to inspect the presence of cut-down electrical cables or wires in the eroded buildings, class room walls, Science laboratories, and computer laboratories.  If it is found out, they are required to repair it immediately.

PROTECTION FROM ACCIDENTS:

Headmasters/Headmistress should take proper steps to prevent students playing in the upstairs stair cases.  Headmasters/Headmistress are also asked for the  proper inspection and regulation of gas cylinders and other heat generating sources in the laboratories regularly so as to avoid fire accidents.

PROTECTION DURING TRANSPORT:

The Headmasters/Headmistress should advise the students about the possible

dangers of travelling in the bus footsteps and it should be stopped.  If the school is located near the road ways, it is the duty of the headmasters/headmistress to see whether proper speed breakers are constructed or not.  If there is no speed breaker, the headmaster/headmistress should take proper initiative for the construction of speed breakers.  The headmaster/headmistress should make clear room for the students to cross the school near-by roads safely.  In this connection the Headmaster/headmistress should nominate a responsible teacher for daily supervision.  Above all, the headmasters/headmistress are advised to check keenly whether all the students have been got out of the classrooms in the evening before closing the class rooms.

N.B. It is a positive direction from the directorate of School Education.  There are sensible head of the institutions, who are following most of the above direction.
