HISTORY:
It was ruled by the Cholas, the Pandyas,
the Cheras, and the Nayaks. At the final
stage, it was under Marthanda Varma who established Travancore and the present
Kanyakumari District was called as Southern Travancore. Under the Travancore rule, people of
Kanyakumari developed the mixed culture of Tamil and Malayalam. Later under the leadership of Marshal Nesomony
Kanyakumari District was merged With TamilNadu in 1956.
GEOGRAPHY:
Kanyakumari lies at the meeting point of
the three seas the Arabian, the Indian, and the Pacific. Its Northern and Eastern borders are in touch
with Tirunelveli District While the Western and the Northwestern borders are in
contact with the Kerala State,
TRANSPORTATION:
Kanyakumari is connected with India by
means of both Railways and Roadways.
AREA:
It covers 1672 square kilo meters,
surrounded with beautiful hills and the plains bordered with blue seas. Everywhere it is GREEN with plenty of coconut
trees, Rubber plantations and other vegetation’s.
POPULATION:
As per census of 2011, the population is
1863174. It is the 19th most
populous district of Tamil Nadu and it accounts for the second most densely
populated districts of Tamil Nadu.
LITERACY:
The literacy rate is 94.72 percentage which
occupies the first position in the rank of literacy in Tamil Nadu. Male literacy rate is 94 percentage while the
female literacy rate stands at 91 percentage
EDUCATION:
Kanyakumari, a district with lesser Industries
but with many educational institutions such as Matriculation Schools, C.B.S.E
Schools, State Board Schools, Arts Colleges, Engineering Colleges, and
Medicinal Colleges stands UNIQUE among all the districts of Tamil Nadu.
CLIMATE AND MONSOONS:
In Kanyakumari there exists a moderate
climate throughout the year. Winters are
enjoyable and it covers between Novembers to early February with the
temperature range of 17 degree centigrade to 32 degree centigrade. Summers are also pleasant with gentle
sea-breeze and the temperature ranges between 20 degrees centigrade to 35
degrees centigrade. Though, March to May are slightly warm, it is very
optimum for Sun-Bath and Beach activities.
TOURIST SPOTS:
Kumariamman temple, located at the
sea-shore of Kanyakumari, Gandhi Memorial that was designed in such a way that
the first ray of the Sun falls on the Gandhi Samadhi on the second October, the
birth day of Gandhi; Vivahanda memorial, located in the middle of the sea; and
the massive Tiruvalluvar statue are the prominent spots in the sea-shore of Kanyakumari. Kanyakumari as a tourist spot, famous for
witnessing the Sun-set and the Sun-rise.
The other tourist spots include Vattakottai, PadmanathapurmTemple,
situated near Thuckalai, Thiruparappu water falls, Mathoor hanging bridge,
Keeripari Jungle and peachu pari dam.
